One hundred weeks, two newsletter service changes, and one (probably not the last) name change ago a newsletter was born by the name of "Wannabe Indie Gamedev" on the now-defunct Revue. There's a chance you've never heard of it, but its archive is still available on Substack. It is now called Gamedev Dairy, and I heard it’s fairly decent 😉
I'm constantly amazed that I've managed to send you all emails for 2 years every week!
The biggest successes?
You taught me discipline! There's no doubt that the belief that someone is waiting for these emails and reading them motivates me not to stop.
You're still here! Thank you!
Your silent support makes me less likely to give up or change my mind too easily! Whether it's the power of Blueprint in Unreal Engine, the simplicity of Mono Game, or... I wanted to write about something that Unity would have, but at this point, it probably doesn't make sense 😉 I stick with the Godot engine. It's a good choice, but without pressure and expectations from your side, I might have given up halfway through the tutorials.
I would say I'm taking baby steps, but the truth is that in two years, a baby accomplishes things that an adult can't repeat unless they grow wings and start to fly. So, these are just small steps. But forward!
Failures?
I haven't mastered the Godot engine to the extent that I feel comfortable with it. But a week ago, I bought a bundle of Godot courses focused on several game genres. In a sense, I'm starting over, but I'll organize my knowledge better.
I haven't made any games.
What's next?
I won't bother numbering future releases. Just as I don't feel like keeping track of how old I am since I turned 33, this hundredth issue will be the last one I manually number. It's the ultimate achievement in self-discipline for me.
Some changes await my second newsletter - Godot Weekly - which I plan to move to another service for convenience. Curated.co is too immature for efficient work.
Working on the second newsletter and collecting tutorials gave me the idea to create a database in Notion or Airtable to organize all this great content into a learning roadmap!
I'm also thinking about
begging for moneycrowdfunding. Maybe someone will find this roadmap useful 😊 What do you think?
